Though debt collectors may contact you in person or by mail, telephone, telegram, or fax, certain practices are prohibited under the Fair Debt Collection Act. For example, a collector may not contact you before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. unless you agree to this. Nor may an agent contact you at work if the collector is aware that your employer objects to such contacts. Debt collectors aren't allow to harass or abuse the debtor or any third parties they encounter. They may not threaten violence, use profanity or obscenities, or call repeatedly with the intent of annoying a debtor. It's prohibited for a collector to publish a list of people in debt, except to provide such information to a credit bureau. When collecting a debt, the person or agency may not make false or misleading statements to the debtor, such as threats of lawsuits or property seizure when these actions aren't legal and actually being considered. Collectors are forbidden to disseminate false credit information about you to any other party or to use an assumed name in dealing with you.
